Sam(VanHeflin),nowadrifterandgambler,stopsinthesmalltownbychancetohavehiscarrepairedafteranaccident.Whilewaitingforrepairs,athisoldhome,nowaboardinghouse,hemeetsAntoniaToniMarachek(LizabethScott),whohasjustbeenreleasedfromjail.Sheislaterpickedupforviolatingherprobationbynotreturningtoherhometown.SamgoestoseeWalter,toseeifhecanusehisinfluencetogetherreleased.
